Walk-In Cooler & Freezer Installation and Repair in NJ — Built to Health Code, Backed by Warranty

Walk-in coolers and freezers are the single most expensive piece of refrigeration equipment most NJ restaurants own. A bad installation costs you for ten years. Cold Freeze Technologies has been designing and installing walk-in refrigeration since the 1980s — sized right, built to health code, backed by a real warranty.

What goes into sizing a walk-in cooler correctly

Most contractors pull a number out of thin air. Frank runs the actual load calculation: box volume, ambient temp, product load (how much comes in warm), door cycles per day, and what the unit is storing. Underpowered refrigeration runs constantly, burns out compressors, and never holds temp during a Saturday rush. Oversized units short-cycle, build ice, and kill the evaporator. Get the load calculation wrong and you're replacing the condensing unit in three years. We do it right the first time.

New walk-in installation — what's included

Panel fabrication or coordination, condensing unit selection and mount, evaporator coil selection and install, refrigerant line set, electrical rough-in coordination, thermostat and defrost timer setup, health department documentation. We do the full scope under one NJ license — no subcontracting the refrigeration to a separate guy who disappears when there's a problem. Every walk-in install carries a 1–5 year parts warranty.

Walk-in repair — common failures and what they cost

Condensing unit failures run $1,400–$4,500 depending on horsepower. Evaporator coil replacements: $600–$1,800. Door gaskets and heater cables: $80–$240. The most common mistake: people replace the condensing unit because it failed, without asking why it failed. Dirty condenser, failed high-pressure cutout, wrong refrigerant charge — the underlying cause still kills the new unit. We diagnose root cause, not just the symptom.

"Most contractors do refrigeration OR HVAC. We do both — plus ductwork fabrication, kitchen exhaust, warehouse ventilation, and industrial-scale cooling. One call, one crew, one licensed contractor who stands behind the work."

Common questions about walk-in coolers & freezers

A complete walk-in cooler installation (6×8 box, condensing unit, evaporator, line set, electrical) runs $8,000–$16,000 depending on size and refrigerant type. Larger custom installations run higher. We give you a line-item quote before any work starts.
Yes — this is the most common call we get. Not holding temp is usually a refrigerant charge issue, a dirty condenser, or a failed evaporator fan. All three are diagnosable on-site. If the problem is the compressor, we'll tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense based on the unit's age.
Yes — walk-in freezers, combination cooler/freezer units, and blast chillers. Walk-in freezers have more demanding refrigeration specs and are less forgiving of charge errors or airflow problems. We size and charge them correctly the first time.
Most walk-in installs run 1–3 days depending on size and whether the box is pre-fabricated or field-built. We schedule most installations within the same week for smaller units. Larger custom jobs get a detailed timeline before work starts.
